Jesus said, “What is the kingdom of God like? To what can I compare it? It is like a mustard seed that a person took and planted in the garden. When it was fully grown, it became a large bush and ‘the birds of the sky dwelt in its branches.’” Lk 13:18-19
One hundred and seven years ago, the Titanic sank. The lifeboats were barely occupied by half. In the 18 lifeboats lowered into the water, almost 500 vacancies remained. When the ship disappeared below the surface of the water, about 1,500 people fought for their lives in icy water. People in the boats just looked at them from a safe distance. Only 2 boats out of 18 embarked on a rescue journey. However, they too hesitated for so long that they could not find more than 10 living people.
Imagine yourself in the Church, which is a lifeboat in which there are vacancies. What are you willing to do to allow someone else to save themselves? Can you make a space where others find acceptance and rest?
“You can find Calcutta all over the world, if you have eyes to see. Everywhere, wherever you go, you find people who are unwanted, unloved, uncared for, just rejected by society — completely forgotten, completely left alone. This is the greatest poverty. Only in heaven will we see how much we owe to the poor for helping us to love God better because of them.” St. Mother Teresa
