Martha, burdened with much serving, came to Jesus and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me.” Lk 10:40
“Pray and work” is the well-known Benedictine monastic motto. St. Benedict of Nursia was not afraid of work. First he founded 12 monasteries, which he had to leave because of the envy and intrigues of others. However, this did not discourage him and later founded a massive monastery on Monte Cassino, which became one of the main spiritual centers of the Middle Ages. The basic task of the Benedictine monk was to seek God and unite himself with Him. Monks were obliged to read the Holy Scripture for 4 to 6 hours, daily. Their task was not to enter the world. Their task was to live in the monastery so that people from the world could come and meet for fellowship, and thus to find God's way for themselves.
Can you accept that prayer is a productive time during which you build your personality and grow as a person? Can you find time for silent and peaceful listening to God during the day?“First I have to receive in order to give. Only when I find my own heart disease through careful persistence I can be healed. Only the healed heart can receive love and also give to others, without falling into vanity and other passions.” Stepan Smolen
