When Jesus had finished the prayer, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples.” He said to them, “When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come.” Lk 11:1-2
St. Francis de Sales went through a crisis of faith also because of Calvin's teachings about predestination. He believed that he would not avoid damnation and could not love God in eternity. He prayed intensely, but he was so troubled by his doubts that he could hardly eat or sleep after a few weeks. In the end, he found peace only in his decision to love God, at least on earth. One of his prayers was: "God, I sacrifice my whole heart to you, and if I should not love you in heaven, I want to love you at least while I live." Finally, St. Francis becomes a priest and later a bishop. His spirituality is based on the goodness of God and the belief that peace can only be found in the surrender of His will. The circumstances from which our lives weave are the place where we find God. This implies his advice to receive with love the situations we are in.
Do you know what kind of prayer suits you best? Are you trying to deepen in it? Are you talking to God about everything? Do you put all your joys and worries at His feet?
“Each of us needs half an hour for prayer daily, except when we are busy. Then we need an hour. ” Francis de Sales
